I think High Ego Lifters also have the highest insecurities.

ad

I'm all for pushing yourself at the gym, but hate ego lifters. They aren't benefiting themselves and just risking injury. Was doing bench today at the gym, and this guy probably in 30's or 40's prob about 180 , 6'1. I Was warming up on the bench next to him, 1 Plate, 2 Plate, Red Plate, Blue Plate etc. Guy was doing 185 with decent form and death grip. I eventually warm to do 315 for 8-10. And brother sees this, he then switches to 225, and starts bouncing the bar on his chest, on his final rep he couldn't get it and since he didn't have clips one of the plates fell and moved around almost hitting someone.
Not to hate the guy but didnt look like he planned to hit 225lb that day, and cause of impulse choice, he almost done injured someone or himself.
Not trying to sound like a hater, but could've been avoided asking for a spot, or clips, or even just hitting something challenging but realistic.

We've all been there, now when I look over and see a dude slammed 4-5 plates, I stop, take a plate off and coast it out. Too many injuries to play that game

Ego lift?

When I was in my low 30's I missed a trap day and thought I'd throw it in pre-back and do some shrugs on one of the many stations for heavy. Popped the inner bicep tendon doing 780 lb sets of 10 on lift an inch and shrug.

Tendon popped partially, never repaired, and i learned a lesson about ego.

It's the mind-muscle not the heft, that produces long-term.

Much love.

When the skinny ass dude next to me curling 60lb dumbbells…. looks over and sees me curling 30s. The look of pride in his face makes my day

At my age, working out six days per week is the only thing I do have a bit of an ego about. It ends there though, LOL.

Yes some guys are VERY INSECURE whether it's in the gym lifting weights or just in general life. It happens. Some guys just feel insecure which causes them to do and say ridiculous things because they feel like they've been challenged or at least they think they've been challenged. At the end of the day it's obvious and it causes alot of wasted energy and worst case scenario someone gets hurts. So I will agree, ego lifting can be a result of an insecurity...showing off in the gym, talking loud and looking in the mirror are things that some display as a result.

.... <.< >.> ......do we go to the same gym...

Don't we all lift weights for both our ego boost and also to look good and increase our confidence?

You either get your kicks out of lifting big weights and hitting PR's, or you get it from looking bigger and better in a T-shirt. Ego boosts confidence, all of it is part of the same thing and makes you feel good.

Who walks out of the gym after a training session with their head down?!!

No me brother, head is high when I leave. I lift with humility. It's me vs me there, I don't care about anyone else. I care that last week I got whatever weight for 5 and this week I better get 6.

press1's picture

Yeh But when those shoulders suddenly pump up when you put those dumbells down, and cap out to the sides in your T shirt doesn't that suddenly feel great and you are thinking yeah baby I look good in the mirror!!

Hey brother. Good to see ya? How’s everything going?

DavosD's picture

Doing better! Lifting is helping a lot with the mental health issues I'm dealing with. Thanks for asking brother, I appreciate it.

Yeah but who here lifts because theyre addicted to the exhaustion. If I never gained nothing I'd still bang that iron just because I love the feeling of being utterly fucking exhausted and going back for one more set

You're an exception though...you have a savage mentality

100%, I encourage everyone to go balls to the wall. But what he did was based out of insecurity hurting himself(idk) and possibly others. I see it as, If I get injured, I'm out of the games for weeks or even months. I'll admit, I should've offered a spot, would've yelled to get it up and everything.

NWApatches's picture

At least he had the heart to push himself - really you motivated him. I still ego lifting occasionally with the boys sometimes but I get what your saying
